A smartphone app aimed to curb student suicide

The Ministry of Education announced on March 13 that it has been developing a smartphone application to alert parents to warning signs of student suicide.

If the app detects suicide-related trigger words used by children on social networks or Internet searches from their smartphones, their parents will then receive an alert from the app on their own smartphones.

In order for parents to receive alerts, the app should be installed on the smartphones of both parents and children.

The ministry also plans to offer software which will block access to websites that offer suicide tips from students’ smartphones.

According to the ministry, 878 students took their lives between 2009 and 2014.

The causes of student suicide for the period included family conflict (35.5 percent), stress from exam scores (10.7 percent) and bullying (1.4 percent).

Red Velvet to return as quintet

K-pop girl group Red Velvet made a return on March 18 with not only a new album but also a new member.

Formerly a quartet Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy the group will add an extra member named Yeri, SM said on its website recently.
The 16-year-old rookie, described as a jack of all trades for her singing, rapping and dancing, joined SM in 2011.

She had performed in SMTOWN LIVE in 2014 as a member of SMROOKIES.
